NEW DELHI, 28 October 2010 – Kandeh K. Yumkella, the Director-General of the United Nations...

NEW DELHI, 28 October 2010 – Kandeh K. Yumkella, the Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), today received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the TERI University in New Delhi.
Yumkella was honoured for promoting sustainable industrial development in developing countries and economies in transition.
“TERI University applauds his leadership in a variety of initiatives focused on the under-privileged sections of society, and for the promotion of increased international cooperation, specially South-South cooperation, in the fields of sustainable industrial development, renewable energy and energy efficiency, as well as climate change mitigation and adaptation,” said an announcement released by TERI.
“Since becoming the Director-General of UNIDO in 2005, Dr. Yumkella has strengthened country level partnerships with other UN and development agencies to accelerate progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. In recognition of his leadership and his passion for energy and environment-related causes, he was appointed Chair of UN-Energy by the UN Secretary-General in 2007, and in 2009, Chair of the Secretary-General’s Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change.”
Dr. Yumkella received the honour along with Tejendra Khanna, Lt. Governor of Delhi, and Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company.
The TERI University, established initially as “TERI School of Advanced Studies” in 1998, and subsequently renamed as the TERI University in 2006, was conceived to cater to the need of disseminating the reservoir of knowledge created by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), a non-profit research institute set up in 1974 for research along with documentation and information dissemination activities in the fields of energy, environment and sustainable development.
The Chancellor of TERI University is Rajendra Pachauri, who also chairs the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former President Al Gore.

Greening the blue: for a more sustainable United Nations

VIENNA, 4 June 2010 - On World Environment Day, a new UN initiative, “Greening the Blue”, will be launched as a one-stop shop for UN staff who are interested in creating a more sustainable United Nations.

The UN system, which vigorously advocates the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and fosters better climate change policies, seeks to encourage, through this new initiative, deeper and faster changes in all UN organizations toward greater environmental practices, as well as to highlight the progress achieved so far.

Already in 2007, UNIDO's Director-General Kandeh K. Yumkella pledged to make the Organization climate neutral - in line with the United Nations Secretary-General's call. “We cannot credibly lead if we do not do whatever we can to reduce and offset our own climate footprint”, Yumkella said. First measures were immediately introduced.

More recently, Yumkella pledged to cut the travel of Senior Management by 30% - as travel represents more than half of UNIDO's total greenhouse gas emissions. Indeed, staff is encouraged to pursue other alternatives, such as tele- and video-conferencing. The UNIDO Climate Team continuously looks for ways to reduce the Organization's emissions, including a dedicated intranet site where staff can obtain tips to reduce their own footprint, both professionally and personally.

For the statement of the Director-General on World Environment Day, please

For more information on UNIDO's climate neutral initiative, please contact:

To view the report on “Moving towards a Climate Neutral UN” with more detailed information on our footprint and efforts to reduce it, please

For more information on the Greening the Blue initiative, please

VIENNA, 1 April 2010 – Articles by social and human rights advocate, Bianca Jagger; China’s solar power millionaire, Zhengrong Shi; and the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, Nobuo Tanaka; are among the top stories featured in the latest issue of the quarterly magazine, Making It: Industry for Development.

The second issue of the Making It - published by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) - focuses on the role of energy in spurring development. It highlights the importance of energy generation to facilitate productive activities, and the need for improved access to energy as a means of reducing poverty.

The magazine looks at ways industries across the globe can increase output to meet a growing demand while, at the same time, reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Other contributors include Brazilian social scientists, José Goldemberg and Oswaldo Lucon; the CEO of Norway’s Statoil, Helge Lund; and the Executive Director of the Energy and Resources Institute, Leena Srivastava.

UNIDO’s Director-General Kandeh K. Yumkella describes the magazine as being “high-quality, scholarly, but accessible”, and essential in the context of disseminating knowledge more broadly than the UN agency has done before.

The magazine website –
- includes additional material and relevant links, and provides a platform for discussion and debate about the intersection of industry and development, as well as on climate change and sustainable development.

For more information and to subscribe to future issues, visit the website or contact:

Charles Arthur, Editor – Making It
+43 1 26026 3638
<link c.arthur@unido.org - mail "Opens window for sending email">Email
