Title Corruption Prevention to Foster Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Development: Providing Anti-Corruption Assistance to Small Businesses in the Developing World. Volume 1. A Joint UNODC-UNIDO Publication.
Abstract Corruption within and between public and private sectors has become one of the leading problems for businesses all over the world. It is clear that if SMEs were better able to cope with the corruption, they would be in a much better position to fulfill their role with regard to the creation of economic and social welfare, and poverty reduction. In recognition of this fact, UNIDO and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) have initiated a joint project on corruption prevention to foster SME development. The project aims to begin the process of filling the knowledge gap, and to identify and implement the tools needed for SMEs to successfully defend themselves in a corrupt business environment. This publication is part of the initial phase of the planned project activities. An important aspect of this work to-date was to discuss the obstacles for SME development created by public and private sector corruption, to identify successful corporate practices against corruption, and to develop tools tailored specifically to fit the needs of SMEs. The next phase of the project will be to conduct assessment missions and focus group meetings targeting SMEs in selected countries.
