Title A Blueprint for the African Leather Industry
Abstract The gap between resources and production shows the considerable potential of the African leather industry. Reducing this gap is especially critical in an important strategic sector for the economic and industrial development of many African countries. A Blueprint for the African Leather Industry has been commissioned to identify ways in which this potential can be realized. Its purpose is to serve as a guide for designing policy instruments and activities that will assist the different players in the leather supply chain - the government, the private sector and international organizations - to tackle the problems that affect the African chain, applying cost effective solutions within the context of globalization and interregional trade.
The Blue print consists of four parts. Part One places the African leather supply chain in the context of the global supply chain. Part Two examines the production of hides and skins in Africa, and looks at ways that this could be improved. Part Three examines the processing and manufacturing of leather and leather products, and presents recommendations for improvement. Part Four deals with market development and trade promotion.
