As a follow up of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) 2002 and in compliance with the sustainable development targets of the United Nations Millennium Declaration, the Iberoamerican General Secretariat (SEGIB), the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM) of the Government of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) are jointly organizing an Iberoamerican Ministerial Meeting on Energy Security in the Latin American Region.
Ministerial Debates and Round Tables will be established to promote discussions and dialogue on the potential of renewable energy as a way to guarantee the access of a larger sector of the population to economically affordable energy services and to set a foundation for energy security in the region.
About 100 high level participants, including representatives of the Ministries of Energy and related institutions from more than 15 countries are expected to attend the Meeting. The occasion will provide an opportunity for policy makers, experts and planners to review and discuss the present status, barriers, opportunities and commercialisation efforts of renewable energy technologies; as well as to agree on a regional cooperation programme to promote investments in this field in the context of economic and social realities of the Latin American region.
The regional programme will set up an observatory in the region by strengthening and linking existing resource institutions, leading R & D centres and development cooperation agencies working in this field. It will facilitate sharing of information for wide spread dissemination and replication of renewable energy technologies according to the priority needs and possibilities in the Latin American region. The observatory will also offer to the countries specific interventions in the field of renewable energy and its legal, technological, managerial and cultural dimensions.
