VIENNA, 27 February 2015 - The Director General met with Sean O'Neill, Chief Corporate Relations Officer of the international brewer HEINEKEN. They announced plans to work together in a range of sustainability issues that will promote inclusive growth in developing countries. The new partnership will focus mainly on water stewardship initiatives in countries and regions classified as “water-scarce”.

ISLAMABAD, 13 February 2015 – The Director General also met with representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and private sector beneficiaries of UNIDO projects in Pakistan. The meeting was hosted by the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry. A small exhibition was also organized to display products produced by SMEs and entrepreneurs who benefited from UNIDO's technical assistance in the country.
ISLAMABAD, 12 February 2015 – The Director General met with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's key adviser, Sartaj Aziz, who asked UNIDO to expand its operations in the country and to implement more projects to increase institutional capacity and economically empower youth and women.

During the meeting, they agreed that the collaboration between UNIDO and NUST will be further deepened in order to foster entrepreneurship in the field of clean technology innovation in Pakistan.

BEIJING, 15 February 2015 - Director General Li met with CHEN Jining, Minister of Environmental Protection of China (MEP). Li congratulated Minister Chen on his new assignment as the Head of the Ministry and said that he looked forward to strengthening the cooperation with MEP in the field of air pollution control and to seeing the high-level participation of MEP in international events hosted by UNIDO, particularly in areas of cleaner production, green industry and South-South cooperation. Chen highlighted UNIDO’s contribution to China’s environmental protection efforts, especially in the areas of international cooperation, POPs elimination and reduction, as well as climate change.
BEIJING, 15 February 2015 - Director General LI Yong paid a visit to the Foreign Economic Cooperation Office of Ministry of Environmental Protection (FECO/MEP), a long-time counterpart of UNIDO on implementing various programmes and projects. Chen briefed Li on FECO’s long-standing cooperation with international partners, including UNIDO, GEF, WB and ADB. The Director General recalled the important contribution of UNIDO to China’s development and introduced UNIDO’s cooperation priority areas with China, including air pollution control, cleaner production and food security.
BEIJING, 10 February 2015 - Director General LI Yong met with Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). He briefed Gates on UNIDO's mandate that focuses on inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID), the progress of implementing ISID, and UNIDO's projects in Africa. He discussed with Gates about the potential collaboration between UNIDO and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Director General also noted that given the Foundation is very active in the areas of public health and agriculture in Africa, UNIDO's ISID can support the local manufacturing of pharmaceutical and health products as well as the value-adding agri-business and agro-processing activities, and therefore complement the Foundation's interventions and help enhance its impact.
BEIJING, 10 February 2015 - LI Yong, Director General of UNIDO, had a meeting with BI Jingquan, Minister of the Food and Drug Administration of China (CFDA). The Director General congratulated Minister Bi on his new and challenging assignment as the head of the Administration and expressed his gratitude for meeting with him on his fourth day as Minister. Minister Bi reviewed the activities between CFDA and UNIDO, and spoke highly of the excellent working relationship between the two sides. He reiterated CFDA's willingness to strengthen its collaboration with UNIDO in the fields of food safety and pharmaceuticals regulation. They agreed that both sides would sign the memorandum of understanding as soon as possible.

JAKARTA, 9 February 2015 - Director General Li met Hasan Kleib, Ambassador and Director General of Multilateral Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After thanking the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its long-standing support for UNIDO, Li briefed Kleib on the status of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the ninth goal in particular (SDG9), which deals with infrastructure, inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and innovation. Kleib thanked Director General Li for visiting Indonesia and informed him that in order to enhance the cooperation between Indonesia and UNIDO, the country is to establish a National Steering Committee on UNIDO which will be co-chaired by the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
JAKARTA, 9 February 2015 - Meeting Andrinof Chaniago, Head of BAPPENAS (National Development Planning), the Director General expressed his thanks to BAPPENAS for supporting UNIDO and its projects and said that UNIDO stands ready to strengthen partnership on green industry development in the country. The Minister informed the Director General of the recently endorsed National Midterm Development Plan and noted that through this development plan, the Government intends to increase the sustainability of economic growth in the country. The Minister further briefed the Director General on the Government’s plan to establish technology parks. The Director General informed the Minister about UNIDO’s first forum on inclusive and sustainable industrial development which demonstrated that industrial parks were considered a very useful instrument to further promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development.

He also thanked the Government for participating in the fifteenth session of the UNIDO General Conference in 2013 and the two Forums on inclusive and sustainable industrial development in 2014. He said that UNIDO stands ready to strengthen partnership on green industry development in the country. The Director General briefed the Minister on UNIDO’s new mandate on inclusive sustainable industrial development (ISID) and on the new country programme being prepared for Indonesia. Husin informed the Director General of the newly established National Energy Policy, which deals with the promotion and development of renewable energy.

The Director General thanked the Government of Switzerland for having entrusted UNIDO with the implementation of large technical assistance programmes on its priority topics and in its priority countries in general and in Indonesia in particular. He informed SECO of his recent meeting with Head of SECO in Bern and further explained on the new mandate of UNIDO which focuses on inclusive sustainable industrial development (ISID), and briefed SECO on the new pilot Programmes for Country Partnership in Ethiopia and Senegal on industrialization.
JAKARTA, 9 February 2015 - On the occasion of the visit of the UNDP Administrator Helen Clark, an extraordinary United Nations Country Team meeting was convened. The United Nations Resident Coordinator Douglas Broderick welcomed the UNIDO Director General LI Yong to the meeting and briefed him on the 2016-2020 UN Partnership Development Framework (UNPDF). Helen Clark also welcomed and thanked the Director General for participating in the meeting. The Director General thanked Clark and Broderick for the opportunity given to him and briefed the participants about UNIDO’s new mandate which focuses on inclusive sustainable industrial development (ISID) and includes three thematic priorities: productive capacity-building, trade capacity-building, and sustainable production and industrial resource efficiency.

AYUTHAYA, THAILAND, 7 February 2015 - The Director General visited the Charoen Phokaphan Rice’s processing facility, in Ayuthaya province, Thailand. The facility is taking part in UNIDO’s GEF-funded project for Thailand which promotes industrial energy efficiency and the uptake of ISO 50001 certification. After a brief introductory meeting with the Vice-Director of the facility, the Director General toured the project site.
BANGKOK, 6 February 2015 - The Director General thanked the eight participants from the two industrial associations for hosting the meeting. He briefed the participants on UNIDO’s mandate and current activities. During the discussion session, the participants expressed their particular interest in the way UNIDO disseminates its programmes and the results of these programmes to SMEs, and they said their associations were ready to provide relevant assistance if needed.
BANGKOK, 6 February 2015 - The Director General informed the Minister of Industry, Chakramon Phasukavanich on the status of the elaboration of the SDGs, and in particular SDG9. He noted that the experience of Thailand, and of all the more developed countries, showed that industrialization was the key to development, and that African countries recognized the prime role of industry and had made a strong commitment to industrialization. He then briefed the Minister on UNIDO's new pilot Programmes for Country Partnership in Ethiopia and Senegal. He also said that UNIDO was ready to provide services to assist Thailand's commitment to sub-regional development.
BANGKOK, 6 February 2015 - The Director General showed the Deputy Prime Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula several examples that demonstrated UNIDO’s relevance and efficiency: the successful results of the seven Pillar Test undertaken by Ernst & Young on behalf of the European Union, USAID's desire to partner with UNIDO in Morocco and Tunisia, CIDA's wish to partner with UNIDO on several projects and so on. He also briefed the Deputy Prime Minister on UNIDO's new pilot Programmes for Country Partnerships. The Deputy Prime Minister said that the Government has put up a new investment plan which promotes overseas investment and encourages to develop new high-technology and eco-friendly industry sectors.

He also reported the new development in UNIDO’s Technical Cooperation programmes, especially the new pilot Programmes for Country Partnerships which are being developed in Ethiopia and Senegal. The Deputy Minister said that Thailand would support the continued presence of SDG9 in the SDGs and UNIDO's new pilot Programmes.

NEW DELHI, 14 January 2015 – The Director General visited the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), one of the largest developing-country institutions working towards sustainability. Its activities range from formulating local- and national-level strategies to shaping global solutions to critical issues. TERI also has several research centres in India, and developed a research base in Africa that aims to provide technical assistance and facilitate exchange of knowledge among the communities in various African states. The current Director General of TERI, R. K. Pachauri, is an internationally recognized leader on environmental and energy issues. He is also one of UNIDO’s Goodwill Ambassadors.
