The region of Europe and Central Asia embraces 29 countries and is highly diverse in terms of size, location, population and social development. The challenges facing the region are anchored in a unique and unprecedented transformation process starting in the early 1990s that affected the overwhelming majority of countries. Transition from a centrally-planned economic model to the establishment of a well-functioning market economy is the overarching goal of the region.
The Europe and Central Asia Programme plays a key role in the development, coordination and monitoring of UNIDO technical cooperation (TC) programmes and projects, and it works to generate and disseminate industry-related knowledge through the promotion of global forums.
The three core functions of the Europe and Central Asia programme - strategic demand management, relationship management, and country portfolio monitoring and management - are to achieve following goals:
