4. Description of the UNIDO panel:
"SMEs play a vital role in virtually all countries: they drive economic growth, generate employment and thus help to achieve long-term sustainable poverty reduction. Access to information and support services and the use of ICTs are instrumental in helping SMEs to grow and become competitive.
There is thus an economic and business driving force to facilitating access to information and introducing ICTs for SMEs in developing countries. This is far more likely to lead to a situation where the necessary conditions for widespread introduction of ICTs to all levels of society in a country will be possible. Providing reliable and fast access to the Internet is not enough; it also necessary to do something economically productive with it to pay for the continued connectivity and expansion of its use. Assistance in establishing sustainable information services and access to ICTs for SMEs is required, as these are under-supplied by the market."
