Renewable and Rural Energy

UNIDO is implementing a large and diverse portfolio of renewable and rural energy projects in line with its core mandate to promote sustainable industrial development in developing countries, and within the broader priorities of MDGs and climate change. The main focus of UNIDO’s renewable and rural energy programme is in three key areas:

  1. Enhancing access of rural poor to modern energy services;
  2. Promoting renewable energy for productive uses; and
  3. Supporting renewable energy technologies for industrial applications in SMEs.

The UNIDO’s renewable and rural energy portfolio specifically focuses on technology transfer, capacity building , and information dissemination , covering key renewable energy technologies (such as biomass, solar, wind and small hydropower), and it strives to achieve the following outputs / results:

  • Enhancing access of poor to modern energy services in rural areas of developing countries;
  • Demonstrating the technical, economic and social feasibility of the different renewable energy technologies and generation methods in on/off grid areas;
  • Promoting sustainable local enterprises that could provide reliable energy supply services through renewable energy sources;
  • Promoting productive uses and income-generating activities related to the use of powered by renewable energy , mainly in the rural areas not connected to grid;
  • Supporting capacity building of national institutions, enabling policy environment and manufacturing enterprises that help in promoting renewable energy markets; and
  • Organizing global forum activities to promote information dissemination, lessons learned and exchange of ideas, and strengthening south - south cooperation.
