Expert Group Meeting
Garden Sea View Resort, Pattaya City, 20150 Thailand
Thailand, 21-23 September 2005
UNIDO will be holding an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) to introduce an innovative means of improving the efficiency of industrial energy end use. The EGM will be hosted by the Government of Thailand, Ministry of Industry, Department of Industrial Promotion, in cooperation with UNIDO, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the Alliance to Save Energy.
The EGM will introduce a new approach designed to shift the focus of industrial markets from buying and selling equipment components to the purchase and provision of services that result in optimization of industrial energy systems. The resulting improvements in energy efficiency, reliability and productivity have the potential to reduce fuel and power bills, increase the competitiveness of industrial firms and lead to measurable reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.
Industrial manufacturers have improved the performance of individual system components such as motors, steam boilers, pumps, fans and compressors, to a high degree, but these components only provide a service to the users’ production process when operating as part of a system. Industrial electric motor and steam systems consume huge amounts of energy and can be very inefficient.
The EGM is the first step in a regional capacity building programme designed to combine “market push” via national standards and “market-pull” via delivery of UNIDO’s training curriculum on systems optimization to both buyers (industrial energy users) and sellers (manufacturers / distributors / vendors). The programme will put in place a methodology to enable individual system optimization projects to be linked with existing quality and environmental or energy management systems such as ISO 9000/14000 or ANSI/MSE 2000. It will result in a closer linkage between business practices for the management of energy and energy efficiency and the core industry values of global competitiveness, cost reduction, increased productivity and environmental compliance.
