  • The Syrian Arabic Republic is located in the Middle East, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Lebanon and Turkey. Its territory covers an area of 185,180 km².
  • Most of the country is a semi-arid and desert plateau with the exception of a narrow costal plain and mountains in the west. Almost 25% of the land is arable, of which only 4.43% is used for permanent crops.
  • Climate - mostly desert; hot, dry, sunny summers (June to August) and mild, rainy winters (December to February) along coast; cold weather with snow or sleet periodically in Damascus.
  • Population - 18,448,752 (2005 est.).
  • Median Population Age - 20.37 years (2005 est.).
  • Agriculture accounts for 25%of the total GDP.
