The UNIDO-ITPO/Arab Regional Centre for Entrepreneurship and Investment Training (ARCEIT) entrepreneurship training programme is gaining momentum in Bahrain and in the region.

On 24 May 2006, Chairman of the Bahrain Development Bank, Shaikh Ebrahim Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, presented 25 trainers from the United Arab Emirates with their certificates after successfully completing a two-week UNIDO-ARCEIT Entrepreneurship Development and Enterprise Creation Programme. The UAE training of trainers took place in Abu Dhabi and was organized by ARCEIT in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the Abu Dhabi Businesswomen Council, the Arab Gulf Program for United Nations Development Organizations, the Bahrain Development Bank and the Bahrain Business Incubator Center. The certificate ceremony took place at the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The programme in Abu Dhabi is financed by the American Embassy through the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). The 25 graduates, a good percentage of whom are women, will now manage and conduct the training in the UNIDO-ARCEIT Entrepreneurship Development and Enterprise Creation Programme in Abu Dhabi.

The UNIDO-ARCEIT Entrepreneurship Development and Enterprise Creation Programme has four building blocks: "collective capacity building"; "business counseling, technology tie-up and joint venture collaboration"; "financial linkages"; and finally "incubation" which takes two forms: in-wall and out-wall (virtual) - see more on the Programme.

On May 10th, just one week prior to the Abu Dhabi ceremony, a similar capacity building programme was concluded in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In Riyadh, all 17 trainers were women. These trainers will go on to manage and conduct the training in the UNIDO-ARCEIT Entrepreneurship Development and Enterprise Creation Programme in Riyadh. The training of trainers in Riyadh was organized under the patronage of Prince Talal Bin Abdul Aziz, President of the Arab Gulf Program for United Nations Development Organizations, in cooperation with the Council of Saudi Chambers of Commerce and Industry; the Bahrain Development Bank; and the Arab Open University, Saudi Arabia.

Since its inception, UNIDO/ITPO-ARCEIT has conducted 18 Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (EDP) in Bahrain. The last four took place in quick succession between the 15th EDP on 27 May - to the 18th on 5 July. At the 15th EDP in May, 14 graduates received their certificates from Minister of Industry and Commerce, Hassan Fakhro, followed by a batch of 12 graduates from the 16th EDP in April, 19 graduates from the 17th EDP in May, and a further 16 from the 18th EDP in July.
