The development of competitive agro-industries is crucial for creating employment and income opportunities as well as for enhancing the demand for farm products. Agro-industry development has the potential to provide employment for the rural poor in off-farm activities such as handling, packaging, processing, transporting and marketing of food and agricultural produce. There are also risks and trade-offs associated with agro-industrial development often affecting the most vulnerable countries and people. It is thus important to build on experiences and understanding of trends in order to formulate sound policies and strategies for fostering agro-industries.

The purpose of the Global Agro-Industries Forum is to bring together senior level policy makers, food industry leaders, UN technical agencies, civil society organizations and agro-industry specialists to:

- Raise awareness of the contributions that agro-industries can make to economic development and poverty reduction
- Promote pro-action and cooperation for fostering development of agro-industries that create employment, as well as add value and increase demand for farmers’ products
- Identify and build on innovative strategies and experiences gained in rapidly progressing regions and countries to spread and deepen progress and benefits
- Reinforce alliances and partnerships from local to global levels to support adaptations of agricultural production, processing and marketing systems

The Global Agro-Industries Forum 2008 is co-organized by FAO, UNIDO, IFAD and the Government of India, which has offered to host this major international event. Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella , Director General of UNIDO, will take part in the official inauguration of this forum.
