Workshop in Viet Nam looks at ways of greening the hotel sector

HOI AN CITY, Viet Nam, 10 January 2012 – Some 80 participants representing the Government, as well as local and international experts and hotel managers took part in a workshop in Hoi An that looked at ways to “green” hotels to make them more environmentally-firendly.

The event was organized by Hoi An City People’s Committee with technical assistance from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

The workshop, “Greening the Hotel Sector: Acting Environmentally and Socially Responsible”, was part of a Green Industry development project that is helping the Vietnamese Government adapt innovative policies and initiatives for sustainable industrial development in key sectors whilst reducing greenhouse gas and other emissions, as well as reducing resource consumption and waste.

At the workshop, participants shared international practices on resource efficiency, cleaner production and corporate social responsibility in sustainable tourism development. They also looked at global eco-concepts, action plans and benchmarks on energy, water use and waste management in hotels. In addition, a training course was given to representatives of sixteen hotels in Hoi An in applying these concepts.
