Current issue: Green industry
The current crisis provides a golden opportunity to position economies on more sustainable pathways of growth by undertaking green public investments and implementing public policy initiatives that encourage greener private investments offer the potential to jump-start economies.
Against this background, UNIDO has launched its Green Industries Initiative to create awareness, knowledge and capacities in those legislative bodies responsible for environmental issues within client countries. As such, UNIDO will work with governments to support industrial institutions that in turn provide assistance to enterprises and entrepreneurs in all aspects relating to the greening of industry. Some of the issues covered relate to:
- Low-carbon paths to industrial development
- Efficient use of non-energy raw materials
- Design of environmentally friendly products and services
- Use of recycled industrial and non-industrial wastes as a substitute for virgin raw materials
- Adoption of products and technologies to meet international commitments or environmental standards in foreign markets
- Adoption of environmental and related management systems as a requirement to enter into global "value chains"
- Creation of businesses that offer services in all these areas
