Cooperation between India and UNIDO; a growing partnership
The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, is the nodal Ministry for UNIDO operations in India.
During the visit of Director-General of UNIDO, Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella to India in February 2010, he met Mr. R.P.Singh, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, when both underlined the strong cooperation between India and UNIDO.
DG-UNIDO mentioned in particular the strategic significance of the partnership with a large emerging economy like India and the crucial role of DIPP in facilitating that expansion. The multi-dimensional growth of UNIDO’s programme delivery in India includes, inter alia, initiatives towards poverty reduction in rural areas, especially through cluster development programmes; energy and environmental services; and south-south cooperation.
Mr. Singh highlighted the importance of partnership in developing agri-business and food processing value chains in the country during the discussions.
