Observatory for Renewable Energy in Latin America and the Caribbean

This UNIDO project was endorsed during the Iberoamerican Ministerial Meeting organized by SEGIB, MIEM and UNIDO, held in Montevideo, Uruguay in September 2006 (read more). In addition to the 13 signatories of the Ministerial Declaration and government representatives of Montevideo, letters of endorsement for the Observatory have been received from Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Dominican Republic and Belize.

One conclusion of the meeting was the need for establishing a virtual cooperation forum for promoting specific projects for productive and industrial applications of renewable energy, reducing poverty and stimulating sustainable development in the LAC region as well as promoting research and technology development in that field. UNIDO was required to design, establish and identify funding for an Observatory for Renewable Energy in the LAC region.

UNIDO has signed two respective MoU with ITAIPU Binacional/ Electrobrás (read more) and OLADE (read more), which establish a cooperation and strategic working framework for UNIDO in the LAC region.
