The Shanghai World Expo 2010

The Shanghai World Expo 2010 under its main theme of “Better City, Better Life,” will showcase a number of initiatives aimed at achieving greener, safer, healthier, prosperous, inclusive, well managed cities – currently where over half of the world’s population resides.

Taking place on 1 May to 31 October 2010, the expo covers a surface area greater than five square kilometers in the city of Shanghai, China.

The expo hopes to attract 70 million people to see the displays of exhibitors from over 200 countries from the public and private sectors, civil society and international organizations.

The sub-themes of the expo are:

  • Blending of diverse cultures in the city
  • Economic prosperity in the city
  • Innovations of science and technology in the city
  • Remodeling of communities in the city
  • Interactions between urban and rural areas

In addition to visual exhibitions, the United Nations (UN) Pavilion will be host to a series of events during the entire six months of the expo.

The UN Pavilion

The UN will demonstrate its work in a 3,000 square meter pavilion. The theme is "One Earth, One UN."

The Pavilion will be situated within the international organizations area of the expo site. It will host permanent and rotating exhibitions as well as a busy programme of activities.

UN-HABITAT, the agency in the United Nations System for sustainable urban development, will coordinate the participation of agencies, programmes and funds of the UN at the expo.

UNIDO: Greening Industry for a Better Life

Taking part in the UN Pavilion exhibitions, the UNIDO Week, which takes place from 23 to 28 May 2010, presents UNIDO's “Greening Industry” concept through a series of high-level discussions and an exhibition.

We define “Greening Industry” as a commitment to reduce, on a continuous basis, the various environmental impacts of processes and products. "Greening Industry for a Better Life" requires a holistic approach, with both energy and environmental policies and strategies playing strong and defining roles.

During the UNIDO Week, UNIDO will present a line of stories from the field. Click here to read the first story.

The message: One Earth, One UN

Since ancient times, cities have set the social, political, economic, cultural, scientific and environmental trends of the world – both good and bad. With half of humanity now living in cities, and with urban poverty, pollution and crime rising, one of the biggest challenges facing the global community is sustainable urbanization.

The crucible of change, a magnet for people from everywhere, the city is the laboratory of our humanity, the engine of sustainable economic growth and development.

The UN is the international forum where all nations meet as equals in the common interest of our One Earth. The Shanghai World Expo 2010 will give every UN agency the opportunity to showcase new ideas and solutions for cities, presenting the challenges and opportunities of globalization.
