UNIDO signs new initiative to help boost CDM activities in Pakistan
On 25 November, 2008, UNIDO, The Pakistan Ministry of Environment and the Government of Pakistan jointly signed a new initiative, which will help boost CDM activities in the country and attract foreign investment.
The initiative titled “Institutional Capacity Enhancement for Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in Pakistan"and ultimately tackles environmental issues mitigating the effects of climate change.
The Director-General of the Ministry of Environment, Jawed Ali Khan and UNIDO representative Shadia Yousif Bakhait signed the initiative, and The Federal Minister for Environment, Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi was a Guest of Honor during the signing ceremony. Also present was the Secretary of Environment Khushnood Akhtar Lashari.
The initiative falls within one of UNIDO's central pillar, which is Environment and Energy, and aims to create an enabling framework at policy and implementation levels in order to benefit from the CDM opportunity under the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The initiative is funded by the Government of Norway and began its activities in September 2007.
