Competitiveness & Diversification: Strategic Challenges in a Petroleum-rich Economy
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Ghana Ministry of Trade and Industry co-organized an International Policy Conference in Accra, Ghana titled "Competitiveness and Diversification: Strategic Challenges in a Petroleum-rich Economy" on 14 and 15 March 2011.
The conference focused on the role of competitiveness and diversification in the context of resource-rich economies and industrial development in the achievement of broader social and economic development goals.
The Director-General of UNIDO, Kandeh K. Yumkella attended, as well as the President of the Republic of Ghana, John Evans Atta Mills, and the Ghana Minister of Trade and Industry, Hanna Tetteh.
The underlying economic dynamics and structural forces of the so-called resource curse were addressed during the conference, and whether a typical developing country has the necessary configuration of institutions, regulatory framework and human capital to mitigate it.
A Ministerial Roundtable with International Experts addressing this issue was a major highlight at the event.
