Fourth United Nations Conference of the Least Developed Countries (LDC-IV)

In 1981, the UN General Assembly convened the First United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries in Paris to address the special needs of “the poorest and weakest segment of the international community”, the least developed countries (LDCs). The current Programme of Action for LDCs was adopted at the Third United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC-III) in Brussels in 2001.

The purpose of LDV-IV is to assess the above-mentioned Programme of Action and to adopt new measures and strategies for the sustainable development of the LDCs into the next decade. In this context, the objective of the Conference is as follows:

  1. Undertake a comprehensive assessment of the implementation of the Programme of Action for the decade 2001-2010 by LDCs and their development partners
  2. Identify effective international and domestic measures to address remaining and emerging challenges
  3. Reaffirm the global commitment to address the special needs of LDCs made at the major United Nations conferences and summits
  4. Mobilize additional international support measures and action in favour of the LDCs
  5. Formulate and adopt a renewed partnership between LDCs and their development partners

At the end of the Conference, the “Istanbul Programme of Action”, which will determine the global development perspective towards the LDCs for 2011-2020 and include principles and recommendations for the improvement of social and economic state of the LDCs, will be adopted.
