Round Table Forum in Kenya jointly chaired by two Permanent Secretaries
NAIROBI, 26 August 2011- A Round Table Forum endorsed the “Kenya Pharmaceutical Sector Development Strategy” and thereby marked the culmination of a one and a half year strategy building process for the pharmaceutical sector in Kenya. The Forum, jointly chaired by the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries of Industrialization and of Medical Services, respectively, served to obtain feedback from the stakeholders on the Draft Kenya Pharmaceutical Sector Development Strategy. This Draft Strategy evolved from a consultative process involving the full range of relevant public and private sector actors in Kenya, which UNIDO hosted and facilitated. The Strategy maps a common approach to developing the pharmaceutical industry by improving quality standards whilst maintaining competitiveness. It received support from the local pharmaceutical manufacturing sector, Ministry of Medical Services, Ministry of Industrialization, the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, the National Quality Control Laboratory and others.
This shared understanding across different stakeholders is necessary as the pharmaceutical industry is a complex one that spans the jurisdiction of different actors in health and industrial development communities. Coordinated initiatives across these portfolios are indispensable for sustainable, high quality local production of essential medicines in developing and least developed countries that are committed to building such a pharmaceutical industry.
