Tokyo Green Industry Conference 2011

Date and Venue: 16 - 18 November 2011, Tokyo

The Tokyo Green Industry Conference will highlight available environmental/resource conservation techniques and practices, which are good for business and the environment, as well as for employees, communities and consumers.

The Conference will allow for discussions on policy and business solutions to achieve a widespread uptake of proven techniques and technologies, as well as to enable innovation to deliver longer term solutions towards even greater reductions in resource use and pollution intensity.

The Conference will also provide an opportunity to match environmental technology needs with international supply of best available techniques and best environmental practices.

The Tokyo Green Industry Conference is co-organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (MET).

Green Industry

Green Industry is central for achieving industrial growth in developing and emerging economies, while at the same time resolving today’s most pressing environmental and resource challenges. These challenges include mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to climate change; environmentally sound management of chemicals and wastes; and security of supply of energy, water, materials and other natural resources.

Green Industry is a two-pronged sector-strategy for green growth of the manufacturing and related sectors.

Firstly, it aims to continuously improve the resource productivity and environmental performance of all industries, or greening of industries, through proven methods and techniques such as cleaner production, industrial energy efficiency and sound management of chemicals and wastes.

Secondly, it fosters the development of a vibrant supply of innovative environmental goods and services, through the creation of green industries, that develop, deliver and/or deploy environmentally sound technologies -- for example for pollution control, renewable energy and/or Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3R) of wastes.

The Green Industry initiative was launched at the 2009 Green Industry Conference in Manila. The Conference was hosted by the Government of the Philippines, and organized by UNIDO, the International Labor Organization (ILO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

The Initiative aims at scaling-up and mainstreaming Green Industry policies, methods and techniques, as agreed in the Manila Green Industry Declaration, which was signed by 21 Asian countries. Now that a consensus is emerging on the urgency of Green Industry, a strong focus on practical solutions is required, which can be replicated, in a scalable manner, in developing and emerging economies in Asia and worldwide.

Objectives

The Tokyo Green Industry Conference discusses innovative policy options and business strategies for realizing Green Industry in developing and emerging economies. This is aimed at fostering the transfer and implementation of best available technologies for Green Industry development and exchanging experiences on Green Industry programmes and initiatives involving the public and private sectors.

Doing so will assist in positioning Green Industry as the sector strategy for Green Growth and Green Economy. Moreover, Japanese and international technology and related solutions relevant to emerging and developing countries will be showcased, both during the Conference as well as in the parallel exhibition.

Participants

Over 700 participants are expected, including some 200 foreign participants. It is expected that more than 26 developing and emerging countries will be represented by their Ministers of Industry and/or senior government officials. Representatives from the international business and technology sectors are also expected, in addition to senior officials from the UN Agencies, international/regional organizations, prominent experts, media and civil society.

Languages

The Conference will be conducted in English and Japanese (simultaneous translation will be provided).

INCHEM Tokyo 2011

The Conference will be held in parallel with INCHEM TOKYO 2011, an event bringing together five specialized exhibitions with a wide supply of environmental technologies and services, namely: Plant Engineering Show; Innovative Products; Innovation in Water Management; Green Energy and Ecology; and ECO-MAnufacture.

Special arrangements have been made for participants of the TOKYO Green Industry Conference to visit INCHEM free-of-charge, and to benefit from guided exhibition tours and business and technology matching services.
