Animated Visual Training Tool
Technology has progressed a big way in the past decades. Information and communication technology (ICT) should make also visible impact on the present status of professional education and training applicable for leather- and leather products manufacture. Conventional training and learning methods and routinely suggested course durations, forms and arrangements suit neither today’s would-be employees nor industrial operations.
Education and training in leather based industries in spite of some initiatives by various institutions, have not fully used the available technology for training. There are several reasons behind this.
During various workshops and traings organized by UNIDO it was realized that training efficiency should be higher and can be improved by use of available technology. In order to achieve this goal, and increase efficiency of the training UNIDO has developed animated Visual Training Tool (VTT).
VTT is intended to serve as a practical training tool for UNIDO workshops in developing countries. The main target audience are leather technologists, tannery managers as well as decision makers of different profiles. It is also expected to help the staff of EPAs and members of NGOs in better understanding of key issues and principles of treatment of tannery waste waters.
The presentation draws extensively from UNIDO paper Introduction into treatment of tannery effluents (What every tanner should know about effluent treatment) and other UNIDO studies and reports.
Inevitably, to keep it short and concise there are many simplifications of this rather complex subject. Similarly, to facilitate better understanding the whole topic is split into blocks covering the main treatment steps and operations.
Chapters
The animated presentation will, include the following chapters:
1. Load, norms, in-house treatment
The aim of effluent treatment; pollution load/the main waste water quality parameters; typical discharge norms; general overview of treatment of tannery effluents, segregation of streams, treatment of spent liming floats, treatment of chrome-bearing floats
2. Treatment within tannery compund
Pre-treatment for discharge into CETP collection network, physical-mechanical (primary) treatment for discharge into municipal sewage;
3. Sludge dewatering
Sludge thickeners, sludge pumps, filter press, centrifuge, belt filter press, flow-chart of physical-chemical treatment, sludge drying beds;
4. Biological (secondary) treatment
Activated sludge, aeration devices, oxidation ditch, flow-chart of the biological treatment;
5. Occupational safety and health (OSH) common effluent treatment plant (CETP) costing and management
Monitoring, OSH at work, CETP collection, CETP costing, flow-chart of fully fledged treatment;
Visual Training Tool was prepared under the project Reduction of environmental threats and increase of exportability of Bangladeshi leather products co-funded by European Union and implemented by SEQUA (lead), BTA, BFLLFEA, bfz, DCCI and UNIDO
