Friends of ALMA Manufacturers' Forum sends Communiqué to African Heads of State

NAIROBI, 30-31 May 2011- A two day meeting referred to as the Friends of ALMA  Manufacturers’ Forum was held in Nairobi, to examine barriers and solutions to the growth and development of the pharmaceutical industry and manufacture of other medical and vector control commodities, for malaria in Africa.

The Friends of ALMA Manufacturers’ Forum was hosted by the Government of Kenya, and co-convened by: the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA), Roll Back Malaria (RBM), The UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for malaria (UNSEO), the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund), the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

The Forum was attended by 115 delegates from a range of backgrounds and interests – manufacturers (locally  from Africa and elsewhere globally); investors, development partners, academics, and non-governmental organizations.

The primary purpose of this Forum was to re-examine the situational analysis, and importantly focus on solutions to chronic ‘bottlenecks.’ More specifically, the objective was to encapsulate this analysis, and with a joint ‘voice’ expressed via a Communiqué produced at the meeting, urge African Heads of State to support the interventions and actions identified, and so increase momentum and the pace of change and development so sought after.
