Duration: 3-6 working months

Duty Station: UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna

Organizational Context: The Office for Gender Mainstreaming, Ethics and Accountability (ODG/GEA) of UNIDO is responsible for promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women within the Organization, including the systematic gender mainstreaming  of all policies, programmes and organizational practices.  The Office serves as the Secretariat of the Gender Mainstreaming Steering Board that oversees the implementation of UNIDO’s four yearly Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (GEEW) strategies under the leadership of the Director General.   The Office serves also as the Chair of the Gender Focal Points Network, comprising staff in Headquarters and field offices. The Gender Focal Points (GFPs) are responsible to promote greater awareness of gender issues and gender mainstreaming n their respective organizational branches or field offices. The Office inter alia coordinates the formulation, implementation, review and reporting of the four yearly GEEW strategies, identifies trends, best practices and challenges in gender mainstreaming, serves as UNIDO’s focal point for gender equality and women’s empowerment within the UN system and externally, coordinates development of indicators and benchmarks, provides guidance and facilitates gender related training for staff and promotes knowledge sharing.

Tasks: Under the supervision of the Gender Coordinator, the intern will perform the following tasks:

1. Conduct background research on gender and industrial and development issues, prepare briefing notes, update reference library.  

2. Conduct background research on gender issues in specific countries as required, including monitoring news and research publications, and prepare country briefing notes.

3.  Identify and research on gender mainstreaming practices in international institutions, governments and private sector as well as possible resource and collaborating institutions in the field of gender and industrial development.

Qualification requirements:

a.)    Minimum academic background and/or field of specialisation required: First-level university degree in gender studies or social studies, economics, business administration or international development with a gender focus.

b.)    Computer literacy: Excellent application of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Internet is required.  

c.)    Language skills: Fluency in English required, good knowledge of another official UN working language desirable.  

d.)    Core values: integrity; professionalism; respect for diversity.

e.)    Core competencies: results orientation and accountability; planning and organizing; communication and trust; team orientation; client orientation; organizational development and innovation; initiative-taking.   

f.)    Excellent report writing skills.
