Duration: 3-6 working months

Duty Station: UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna

Organizational Context: The responsibility of the Branch is to promote increased access to energy for productive uses while at the same time supporting patterns of energy use by industry that mitigate climate change and are otherwise environmentally sustainable. This involves promoting energy efficiency and the adoption of renewable energy sources in the industrial sector, in cooperation with the Environmental Management Branch, enhancing energy access, particularly in rural areas to promote productive activities as a major contribution to reducing rural poverty, in cooperation with the Business, Investment and Technology Services Branch, and championing industrial energy perspectives in the global debates about climate change and other energy-related global issues. In addition, the Branch acts as the focal point within UNIDO for UN-Energy and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in close cooperation with the Organizational Strategy and Coordination Group.

Tasks: Under the overall guidance of the Branch Director and the direct supervision of the Unit Chief, the intern will perform the following tasks:1. Research the capacity of public and private-sector support institutions to assist enterprises become more energy efficient, primarily through the adoption of energy management systems and meet their energy demand with renewable sources of energy;2. Study the transfer of appropriate technology and training, tools and methodologies to rural communities so that they can create affordable and reliable energy services;3. Research how countries elaborate coherent policies and institutional frameworks conducive for an environmentally sustainable use of energy by their industrial sector;4. Draft reports and performing other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualification requirements:

a.) Minimum academic background and/or field of specialisation required: first-level university degree in Energy and Engineering or a related field and enrolment in a higher-level university programme.

b.) Computer literacy: Microsoft Windows, proficient use of processing tools such as Microsoft Office package (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) is required.

c.) Language skills: Fluency in English required, good knowledge of another official UN working language desirable.
