Food Safety Assurance System (FSAS)

UNIDO is providing assistance in upgrading the existing network of nine regional rural technology promotion centers, the key suppliers of agricultural equipment; the main beneficiaries to date have been the centers in Jimma, Kombolcha, and Gode. The major problems of post harvest losses –which average between 25 percent (grains) and 50 percent (fruits and vegetables)-has received special attention; in addition to causing immediate material waste, inadequate handling and storage of products weaken the position of farmers as suppliers of raw materials to food processing facilities.

To improve post harvest equipment and practices as well as the general performance of Ethiopian Agriculture, over 200 technicians have received training under the UNIDO programme and 82 demonstration stations are being established and equipped in key agricultural regions such as Awassa, Amhara, Oromo and Tigray.
