Welcome to UNIDO Regional Office of East Africa!

The region covered by the UNIDO East Africa Regional Office includes Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi

The countries covered by the Regional Office are endowed with vast resources from the agricultural and mineral sectors. Examples of such resources include hides and skins, forestry, fish, cotton, coffee, tea, bamboo, fruits and vegetables, gold and even crude oil. It is important that these resources be processed through appropriate productive capacities, so as to increase their value before they are exported to other countries or sold on domestic markets.

In this context thus, the vision of our office is to achieve UNIDO’s mandate of productivity, trade capacity, energy and environment in East Africa. This can be done by assuring that real value addition is indeed generated through improved production processes, and that the emergence of competitive, diversified, socially and environmentally responsible industries can flourish within, among, and from all our partner countries, as a result of our assistance to the private sector and its surrounding supportive environment. By providing technical assistance for these objectives, UNIDO East Africa stays committed to the reduction of poverty and overall improvement of livelihood throughout the Eastern Africa region as our uttermost challenges.

UNIDO activities in the countries of coverage are mainly carried out in the form of Integrated Programmes. The programmes are designed to be responsive to each country's development priorities, as defined in their respective Poverty Reduction Strategy Programmes (PRSP). The UNIDO Integrated Programmes are also in line with the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). Among the countries covered by the Regional Office, Rwanda is one of the pilot countries for the One UN initiative. UNIDO has been fully involved in the formulation of the One UN Programme in Rwanda and will be one of key partners in its implementation.
