It is not known whether chlordane will cause reproductive or birth defectsin humans. Studies of workers who made or used chlordane do not linkexposure to the chemical with birth defects, but there are not enoughstudies in humans to know for sure. There is some evidence that animalsexposed before birth or while nursing develop behavioural effects whilegrowing up.

Chlordane was not mutagenic when tested using 5 different strains of Salmonella typhimurium in the Ames assay and other studies on animal and human cells in culture have shown that chlordane is not mutagenic or is only weakly mutagenic. It was not mutagenic to bacteria and did not damaged bacterial or plasmid DNA.
