UNIDO’s Small Hydro Power Project
The UNIDO project of Micro Hydro plant in Nias Island of Indonesia has been successfully implemented in Indonesia. The plant is planned for official commissioning on 6 March 2008. UNIDO country office in Indonesia recently received a certificate from H.E. Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the President of Indonesia in recognition of UNIDO’s work.
The small hydropower project aims at supplying electricity and promoting productive use activities in the Nias Island of North Sumatra, Indonesia. The region was badly affected by earthquake and subsequent Tsunami waves in the year 2005. UNIDO initiated a small hydropower project in October 2005. The major donors are UN-OCHA (US$150,000) and UNIDO (US$175,057). And the local contribution is US$119,000 from Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Executing Agency (BRR) fund. The Project will provide energy to badly affected communities for rehabilitation in cooperation with the Local Government. Small Hydropower is an important source of energy in such remote islands, and can stimulate economic activities along with associated social and health benefits. In addition to supplying power to the Community Development Center (CDC), power from SHP can also support communication ICT systems, disaster warning, health care, education, entertainment and similar activities.
