SAICM Side Event

The regional SAICM meeting for Latin America was held on 14-16 February 2008 in Panama. A side event of UNIDO within the framework of the Regional CP Programme took place on 16 February 2008.

During the regional SAICM meeting, the SAICM Secretariat and the focal points in the region discussed the achievements reached until the date in terms of implementation of the SAICM activities, the results of the Quick Start Programme in the region, the need for a formulation of a regional action plan and the terms of reference of the representation bodies and individuals for the upcoming SAICM global activities. The side-event on “The contribution of the UNIDO Regional Cleaner Production Programme to the implementation of SAICM” was organized by UNIDO and the NCPCs to present the ongoing activities of the Cleaner Production Programme and its future strategic development, especially within the UNIDO Regional Cleaner Production Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean.
The directors of selected Cleaner Production Centres in the region (Guatemala, El Salvador and Peru) demonstrated the positive impact of the basic services of the NCPCs in the achievement of the goals of the SAICM Global Plan of Action and their direct involvement with the SAICM focal points in the implementation of the Quick Start Programme. Finally one technical expert from the NCPC Mexico presented the concept and the current level of implementation of Chemical Leasing business models in the Mexican companies
