Energy Management System Standards

Context

Energy management system standards provide a viable policy tool and market-based mechanism for supporting and effecting energy efficiency in industry in a sustainable way.

The purpose of an energy management standard is to provide guidance for industrial enterprise to integrate energy efficiency into their management practices using the same “plan-do-check-act” approach of well-known and widely used quality and environment management systems such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Typical features of an energy management system standard include:

  • An energy policy that defines scope, objectives and targets of the energy management system and addressing all significant energy use
  • A strategic plan that requires measurement, management, and documentation for continuous improvement of energy performance and  energy efficiency;
  • A cross-divisional energy management team led by an energy coordinator who reports directly to management and is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the strategic plan;
  • Policies and procedures to address all aspects of energy purchase, use, and disposal;P
  • The identification of key performance indicators, unique to the company, that are tracked to measure progress;
  • Projects to demonstrate continuous improvement in energy efficiency;
  • The creation of an Energy Manual, a living document that evolves over time as additional energy saving projects and policies are undertaken and documented; and
  • Periodic reporting of progress to management based on these measurements.

In a nutshell, energy management systems offer an expert and best-practices based framework for organizations and enterprises to develop energy efficiency goals, plan interventions, prioritize energy efficiency measures and investments, monitor and document results and ensure continuity and constant improvement of energy efficiency performance.
