The President of the General Assembly convened a thematic debate on 1-2 April 2008, in New York, on the theme “Recognizing the achievements, addressing the challenges and getting back on track to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.” Among other elements, the debate featured a high-level panel discussion on poverty and hunger, moderated by Mr. Kandeh Yumkella, Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

UNIDO has for many years pursued an ambitious programme of reform. But, as the Director-General recently said to Member States in Vienna, UNIDO’s reforms“were built on the recognition that no single organization of the UN system, acting alone, can address the major development challenges of our time. But if we combine our strengths and act in concert, our collective impact would be greater and we would be making a difference to the lives of the people we serve”.
