Government Private Sector Institutions
To promote public-private sector partnership, the Tanzania National Business Council was created in September 2001. It is a forum which enables Government and private sector representatives to discuss and agree on the solution of problems faced by the private sector, including industrial issues.
Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) is the main Government agency charged with coordinating, encouraging, promoting and facilitating investment in Tanzania and with advising the Government on investment related matters.
SIDO was established in October 1973 as a parastatal organisation under what is now the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Marketing. Its aim is to develop the small industry sector in Tanzania. Its functions range from policy formulation to direct support to industries, to hands-on involvement in the establishment of SMEs in both rural and urban areas.
The Tanzania Bureau of Standards was established in the mid-seventies to set and monitor the implementation of product standards with a view to improving quality.
Private sector institutions
CTI is the key private sector organization in the sector. It was launched in the early 1990s and brings together medium and large private sector industrial enterprises.
The Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (TCCIA) was set up in 1988 with the support of the Tanzanian Government to strengthen the private sector. TCCIA has 21 Chambers at regional level and more than 67 district centers, linking the private sector to the Government with a view toward promoting the development of private enterprise.
Industrial support organizations
The Tanzania Industrial Research Development Organization was established towards the end of the seventies for research into local raw materials, technology trouble shooting, energy audits and related activities.
The National Development Corporation (NDC), an economic development organization, was established as a statutory corporation by an Act of Parliament in 1962. The purpose of NDC is to initiate, develop and guide the implementation of economically viable projects in partnership with the private sector.
It was established in 1998 by the private sector as the focal organization for the sector grouping prominent membership organizations, chambers of commerce and associations from all productive sectors of the economy.
It was established in the early eighties to address issues relating to agricultural mechanization, rural energy and transportation, with a view to lessening the transport burden and simplify working methods. Over the years, it has established and promoted the use of biogas plants in various parts in the country. It has also promoted the use of ox-driven implements and carts.
TEMDO was established in the early eighties to develop engineering designs, develop prototypes and commercialize the same.
TaTEDO is a national NGO dealing with sustainable modern energy services. The organisation was founded in 1990 as a national non-governmental, non-profit sharing organisation for spearheading the development of sustainable modern energy technologies and services in Tanzania.
Ceest foundation is an independent research institution whose objectives are to undertake research and studies in areas related to energy, environment, science and technology.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is the Central Statistical Office of Tanzania. The websites provide updated statistical reports and has dedicated sections on industries.
The website of the Central Bank of the United Republic of Tanzania reserves dedicated sections to statistical (mainly monetary) data.
The Tanzania Socio-Economic Database ( TSED ) was established by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in collaboration with over 20 Ministries and Government Institutions and supported by UNDP and UNICEF. The main purpose of TSED is to allow an overall, up-to-date view of the socio-economic situation in Tanzania and to facilitate use of data for analysis by policy makers and other users.
