RENPAP
Regional Network on Safe Pesticide Production and Information for Asia and the Pacific
RENPAP is a network to facilitate the efforts directed towards the elimination of POPs. RENPAP consists of 16 countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, P.R. China, India, Indonesia, Iran, South Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Mongolia) under the umbrella of UNDP and UNIDO.
Mission Statement:
“Protection of the environment and providing safety to the farmers in the field and the workers at the production centres & increasing agricultural production through scientific choice and adoption of safer and environment friendly technologies and products needed for the alleviation of poverty and hunger by addressing food security.”
Objective:
“To promote environment and user friendly crop protection agents and their formulations including bio-pesticides and botanical pesticides, and encourage safe handling and disposal as well as effective application techniques, thereby making available more IPM compatible products and techniques of safe handling and use in the field.”
Approach:
RENPAP uses a harmonized approach in promoting environment-friendly technologies, ranging from promoting the use of appropriate personal protective equipment or the development of safe bio-pesticides to giving assistance to industries to enable them to meet safety standards. RENPAP’s structure is de-centralized, with 8 programmatic TCUs (Technical Coordinator Units) and respective Centres of Excellence, hosted by different member countries.
Forums and Activities
At the Industrial Development Board (IDB) spring session (10-12 May 2010), UNIDO presents main initiatives.
At the IDB Meeting, UNIDO Director-General Kandeh K. Yumkella presented concrete measures – four pillars – that UNIDO devised to offset the negative effects of the so-called “megatrends”; in Green Industry, Agro-Industries, Energy and Technology. On the IDB's third day, a special session showcased the close interactions between Energy and Environment, on the examples of UNIDO's POPs activities. Tripartite Review Meeting and Project Management Committee Meeting, Bali, Indonesia, 26-28 May 2008

RENPAP/UNIDO, Bangkok, Thailand, 10 - 13 July 2007
The meeting noted the good work being undertaken on Neem based pesticides in some of the countries and having discussed the possible role that neem could play an important biodegradable pesticide, the meeting recommended that Neem be promoted by RENPAP/UNIDO as an alternative to POP pesticides. The meeting recommended that the Regional project proposal entitled "Demonstration of production and promotion of neem-derived and Bt based biopesticides as viable, eco-friendly/biodegradable alternatives to POPs pesticides in Asia and the Pacific region"prepared by RENPAP/UNIDO and approved in the TPR/PMC meeting held in Nantong, P.R. China, May 15 -16 2004, be processed for seeking GEF funding. The meeting also recommended that technology developed by RENPAP countries be further upgraded to address issues relating to stability, shelf life, quality assurance, socio-economic acceptance, cost-benefit analysis, etc. The meeting recommended that there should be more exchange of information amongst member countries and more workshops/training programmes be organized by RENPAP/UNIDO to keep the member countries up-to-date in the advances taking place in the field of Neem based products. The meeting noted that RENPAP/UNIDO is taking appropriate steps to promote the technology developed in Asia-Pacific region to other parts of the world especially in African continent to foster South-South cooperation.
