Bangladesh
Bangladesh is an agricultural country with some three-fifths of the population engaged in farming. Jute and tea are the principal sources of foreign exchange.
However, the country has witnessed good progress in manufacturing, and strong growth in the manufacturing sector (10.8 %) is driving economic growth.
The manufacturing value added (MVA) per capita is still low, but MVA growth has increased in recent years. Textiles and apparels or ready-made garments as they are called are the most important sectors in Bangladesh, accounting for accounting for almost one-third of manufacturing value-added and more than three quarters of employment. In fact, Bangladesh’s textile industry – including knitwear, ready-made garments and specialized textile products – is the nation’s number one export earner. And many new jobs – mostly for women – have been created by the country’s dynamic ready-made garment industry in the private sector, which grew at double-digit rates through most of the 1990’s.
The main projects of UNIDO cooperation in Bangladesh are:
- The Bangladesh Quality Support Programme, with focus on textiles, fisheris and quality support management (QSM);
- Strengthening the competitiveness of the shrimp sector.
