May 10-Renewed partnership and enhanced cooperation between UNIDO and United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)
On 13 May, 2006, UNITAR-Executive Director, Mr. Marcel A. Boisard (right) and UNIDO Director-General , Mr. Kandeh Yumkella (left) signed a Memorandum of Understanding between UNIDO and UNITAR.
Stressing the need for organizations of the United Nations system to take common and complementary actions to address the complex and growing challenges of environmental degradation, UNIDO and UNITAR agree to sign an Memorandum of Understanding with a view to enhance their cooperation on implementation of Stockholm Convention, chemicals management and capacity building activities. The objectives of the partnership and enhanced cooperation between UNIDO and UNITAR are as follows:
- Increased synergy and complementary through a clear division of labour based on their comparative advantages and technical capacities;
- Optimization of resource mobilization and utilization through joint fund raising, cost sharing and pooling of resources;
- Enhancing the effectiveness and impact of services of the United Nations system through joint programs and better networking activities; and
- Developing new cooperative arrangements and activities with business and industry.

The 19th Meeting of Arab Expert Group (responsible for follow-up of Multilateral Environmental Agreements-MEAs, SAICM and hazardous wastes) took place at the Headquarter of the League of Arabic States in Cairo, Egypt, from 16-18 April 2006.The objective of the meeting is to reach consensus on issues of the previously agreed Agenda which includes follow-up on actions related to Basel Convention, Stockholm Convention, SAICM regional Arab-African proposal, Prior Informed Consent-PIC, Montreal Protocol and database system of management of hazardous wastes in the Arab region.

Unit Chief of UNIDO-POPs and Chemicals Management Unit, Mohamed Eisa, was in Jeddah from 14-16 March, 2006 for the inception workshop of the PDF-A project "Regional promotion of strategies to reduce unintentional production of POPs in the PERSGA region ( BAT and BEP and incremental costs for selected sectors of industry)".

Slovakia's Environment Minister László Miklóssigns US$ 20 million UNDP-GEF-UNIDO POPs project
On 16 February, 2006, Environment Minister of the Slovak Republic, László Miklós, and UNIDO Director-General Kandeh Yumkella signed an agreement on a US$ 20 million Global Environment Faciliy (GEF)-funded demonstration project for the destruction of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) waste, using non-combustion technologies.
