Regional Brief
Promoting industrialization and business competitiveness to combat poverty in the Indian Ocean.
UNIDO's representation in the Indian Ocean is part of the network of 42 offices spread around the world. Based in Madagascar, the agency also covers Comoros, Mauritius and Seychelles.
The Indian Ocean region is situated in a priority zone of UNIDO's work. The Director General of the agency, Kandeh K Yumkella, continues the work of his predecessors in implementing the organisation's projects in Africa with a particular emphasis on achieving the objectives of the Millennium Development Goals (MOD).
Central to the objectives of UNIDO is sustainable industrial development. Indian Ocean representation is working in concert with local governments and the private sector to establish the tools and conditions favorable to achieve this result, through an integrated programme. Special attention is given to strengthening productive capacities and to promote the use of non pollutant and renewable energies.
