Advancing Industrial Energy Efficiency in the Post-2012 Framework
22-23 September 2008, Washington, D.C., USA
This Expert Group Meeting was organised by UN Energy with UNIDO and IAEA as lead agencies.
In preparation for the COP-14/MOP 4 meetings in Poznan, Poland, UN Energy held an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) in Washington, D.C., on September 22nd and 23rd to provide input for a scoping paper and for a side event in Poznan. The EGM aimed to facilitate a focused discussion on industrial energy efficiency and its role in climate change mitigation policies, including some key technical issues in the on-going climate change negotiations. The event highlighted effective industrial energy efficiency policies and measures, discussed sectoral approaches/sector agreements, and examined issues related to quantifying and reporting emissions reductions from industrial energy efficiency. For each of these areas, the EGM addressed a variety of practical arrangements, mechanisms and policies that could be implemented to further the adoption of energy efficiency in industry as one of the key potential elements of the international climate change mitigation efforts beyond 2012.
A joint submission by UNIDO and IAEA
An immediate result of this meeting is this submission by UNIDO and IAEA which was prepared in response to the call for proposals contained in document FCCC/AWGLCA/2008/L.7 as an input to the UNFCCC/Kyoto Protocol Bali Road Map (BRM) negotiation process.
The submission reflects the collective views of the participants in the meeting. As such, they do not necessarily reflect the views of UN-Energy and are submitted with a view to informing and facilitating the process of negotiations on key issues of the Bali Action Plan. A full workshop report and an in-depth issue paper elaborating these points is available and was presented and discussed at a UN-Energy side event in Poznan, on 10 December 2008.
