Country Brief
UNIDO presence in Tunisia dates back 40 years ago. In the mid-90s a permanent country office was established to support the reinforcement of the local industrial development strategy that followed the economic liberalization of the 80s.
During 2001 to 2007, in line with the Upgrading National Program, UNIDO in Tunisia has implemented an Integrated Programme to provide technical assistance to public institutions and local private sector, to strengthen the competitiveness of the Tunisian manufacturing industry. Having recognized the benefits of the Integrated Programme, a second phase has been formulated, jointly with the Tunisian Government, to respond to the priorities of the 11th Social and Economic Development Plan (2007-2011) and it was approved in December 2007. The Programme is coherent with the first phase, however contains innovative aspects that reflect the economic changes at national and international level. It addresses two thematic priorities:
1. Reducing poverty through productive activities
2. Energy and environment
UNIDO´s work in these fields largely contributes to the implementation of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) agreed upon with the Tunisian Government, and to the achievement of the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), notably Eradication of Extreme Povery and Hunger (MDG1), Environmental Sustainability (MDG7) and Global Partnership for Development (MDG8) .
By working toghether with the wider UN family in Tunisia, UNIDO plays an active role in the "One UN" initiative and cooperates with UNDP, FAO, UNFPA, ILO, IOM, in rural community development activities to stimulate employment, women entrepreneurs value chain and market access.
This website has been conceived with the idea of providing updated information about the current country’s challenges and the responses offered by UNIDO to address them.
To facilitate your access to our day-to-day committment the website includes distinct sections that highlight our on-going activities, implemented programs and the latest news from Tunisia.
Thank you for your attention and interest in our work.
