Africa Industrialization Day 2010

TUNIS, 18 November – In the framework of the celebration of Africa Industrialization Day, the UNIDO office in Tunis in cooperation with UTICA  (Union Tunisienne de l’Industrie, du Commerce, et de l’Artisanat) and ATUGE (Association des Tunisiens des Grands Ecoles) organized a conference on competitive industries for the development of Africa. The conference was opened by Afif Chelbi  Minister of Industry, Hedi Jilani  President of UTICA, and the UNIDO Representative in Tunisia, Monica Carco. 

The keynote speakers were the Ambassador of the Republic of Morocco, the representatives of the World Bank, the AfDB, and the President of Tuninvest/Africainvest.

The event was attended by the Ambassadors of Belgium, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt,  Iran, Italy, Sudan and Switzerland, the UN Resident Coordinator, as well as over 100 people from the private and public sector including 25 journalists.

In 1989, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 20 November Africa Industrialization Day. African countries can reflect on this Day on the progress made towards achieving strategic and sustainable industrial development.


International Entrepreneurs Forum

TUNIS, 14 October 2010 – Over 100 young Tunisian entrepreneurs and some 40 entrepreneurs from Bahrain, Iraq and Lebanon participated in the International Entrepreneurs Forum, a two-day event organized by UNIDO, Ministries of Industry, Vocational Training and Employment and other UN Agencies in the framework of the Salon of Enterprise Creation and Technological Development (Salon de la Création et le Développement Technologique des Entreprises) of Tunis.

The forum comprised a number of activities aimed at supporting the young participants in the implementation of their business ideas. Among these activities, one training session on the application of IT tools to different areas of management was offered to fourteen entrepreneurs from the Governorates of Gafsa and El Kef as part of the joint UNIDO-HP GET IT programme.

Furthermore, during the event more than 100 bilateral (B2B) meetings took place between Tunisian entrepreneurs from Tunis, Gafsa and Kef and foreign entrepreneurs from Iraq, Lebanon and Bahrain invited through the UNIDO ITPOs offices.

A workshop on the subject “Youth and enterprise creation: challenges and best practices” was open to all interested parties and saw the participation of national and international experts in the field of business and enterprise creation as well as of young successful entrepreneurs who shared their experiences and their advice with the audience.

Launch of Tunisian Cleaner Production Project

TUNIS, JUNE 2010 - The Tunisian Cleaner Production Project (TCPP) was launched on the June 17 2010 in Tunis, in the presence of Nadhir Hamada, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development. The ceremony took place at the International Center for Environmental Technologies of Tunis (CITET) which hosts the National Cleaner Production Center.

Funded by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), this project aims at strengthening capacities of the National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) in terms of resources efficiencies and clean production.

The project by promoting Eco-friendly or clean production, in line with the national objectives for environmental upgrading, will help enterprises reduce their consumption of raw materials, water and energy, while increasing their competitiveness and economic viability of businesses.

Engaging Tunisian Youth to Achieve the MDGs: a UN Joint program

Tunisia, May 2010 - 56 Representatives of business service providers institutions of 3 target regions of Tunisia, namely GAFSA,   KEF , Grand Tunis Institutions were trained on UNIDO Entrepreneurship Development  and Investment Promotion (EDIP) between December 2009 and April 2010.

The  training,  organized in partnership with the Ministry of Vocational Training and Employment and the Ministry of Industry and Technology,  aims at  reinforcing the capacities of the public institutions supporting enterprise creation and development in the following areas: 

1. Setting up of Institutional Network for EDIP by identifying the role of each institution and areas of cooperation. 
2. Entrepreneurial competencies.
3. The role of Trainers and Coaches.  Achievement Motivation Training.
4. Marketing. 
5. Business plan formulation. 
6. Identification of a business opportunity
7. Financing

The following Institutions have participated: National Employment Agency, Industrial Promotion Agency, Business Centers, Incubators, Agricultural Investment Promotion Agency and Handcraft National Office.

The MED-TEST project: Transfer of Environmental Sound Technology in the South Mediterranean Region

Launched in March 2009, the project is in its advance stage of implementation: 6 Experts of the three Technical Centers 5Agro food, Textile and Leather) have been trained on MED Test methodology in Vienna on 27-29 April, 2009. 
13 Companies have signed contract with the Technical Centers for receiving Technical Assistance  and the first training took place in March 2010. 40 employees of selected enterprises took part to the training led  by UNIDO and the Technical Centers.

Youth Led Program Launch in Tunisia as part of the MDG platform for youth employment

TUNIS, 9 June 2009 - The 3rd stakeholder workshop on MDGF Project “ Engaging Tunisian Youth to Achieve the MDGs” will be held.

TUNIS, 25-29 May, 2009 - A UNIDO expert from Vienna headquarters is visiting the country office in Tunisia and will hold high level official meetings to set the strategy for project implementation.
