UNIDO’s “Agribusiness for Africa’s Prosperity” awarded French-language book prize

PARIS, 14 March 2012 - “Agribusiness for Africa’s Prosperity”, published by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), was today awarded the annual prize for the best book dealing with the economies of French-speaking countries (Le Prix FFA-Turgot).

The prize, presented by France’s Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, Pierre Lellouche, honours books dealing with issues related to the economies of French-speaking countries and helping to popularize thinking on economic matters. The award-winners are selected by the Francophone Business Forum (Forum Francophone des Affaires, FFA), an organization founded in 1987 by the governments of French-speaking countries to enhance relations and cooperation between public and private sectors.

UNIDO Director General, Kandeh K. Yumkella, who is one of the book’s authors, expressed his thanks to the Francophone Business Forum for selecting the publication and for recognizing the authors’ efforts to promote agribusiness in Africa. “Agribusiness holds great promise for Africa’s development prospects, and it is in this context that our team of renowned international experts has analyzed the challenges and opportunities, as well as the potential for this economic transformation to take place,” said Yumkella.

The book examines agribusiness as a dynamic source of sustainable prosperity in Africa. It adopts a value-chain approach, linking all actors in farming, agricultural input industries, agro-industry, raw material-processing equipment and agribusiness services related to finance, marketing, distribution and logistics.

“Agribusiness is Africa’s way out of poverty, and, as a continent, we need to refocus our agricultural and economic growth strategies.” said Patrick Kormawa, another of the authors, who is director of UNIDO’s regional office in Abuja, Nigeria. “Our policymakers and development partners must target interventions along the entire agribusiness value chain and not just agriculture on a stand-alone basis”.

UNIDO was represented at the award ceremony by Jean-Claude Plana, head of UNIDO’s Investment and Technology Promotion Office in France.

The publication is available both in English and French and can be downloaded here
