UNIDO presents regional project for EurAsEC countries

VIENNA, 7 February 2012 – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) today updated representatives of the diplomatic corps on the implementation of a project on enhancing regional industrial integration in Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC) countries.

The event, attended by senior representatives of the Permanent Missions of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation and Tajikistan, was opened by Dmitry Piskunov, UNIDO Managing Director, and an introductory address was given by Ambassador Vladimir Voronkov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to UN Organizations in Vienna.

The USD 2.2 million project was launched in 2010 and is funded by the Russian Federation. It is designed to help create a common economic space among the EurAsEC countries by deepening international industrial cooperation and integration.

Within the project, Centres for International Industrial Cooperation (CIIPs), initiated last year in Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, will help support and coordinate the project.

Other initiatives will focus on developing the EurAsEC industrial cooperation network, upgrading Russian SME food suppliers, modernizing value chains in the textile industry in EurAsEC, facilitating cooperation of technoparks and business incubators between EurAsEC countries and the EU, and expanding cooperation with UNIDO Investment and Technology Promotion Offices (ITPO).
