Director-General Yumkella receives Doctor Honoris Causa for contribution to Africa’s industrial development

LAGOS, Nigeria, 31 March 2012 - UNIDO Director General, Dr Kandeh K. Yumkella was today awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa by the Senate and Governing Council of the Ekiti State University in Nigeria.

Yumkella received the degree for his contribution to the global industrial development and poverty reduction in the developing world. It is also an acknowledgement of his contribution to Nigeria’s industrial development strategy and the development of Ekiti State’s agri-business potentials.

The Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, praised the University’s decision to award UNIDO’s Director-General with this high degree, adding that Yumkella was Africa’s leading advocate for sustainable development and energy for all.

The University also awarded Doctor Honoris Causa to the Vice President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, and the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, Tekena Nitonye Tamuno.
