HYDERABAD, India, 20 September 2010 – Today, The United Nations Industrial Development Organization Centre for South-South Industrial Cooperation (UCSSIC) and Vimta Labs Ltd. launched the UNIDO-VIMTA South-South Training Facility for Testing Laboratories.
PI Suvrathan as Chairperson of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India inaugurated the facility, which aims to ease some of the challenges that developing countries, and especially least developed countries (LDCs), face in exporting their products to international markets. A major challenge faced by developing countries in exporting their products is related to quality control. Lack of accredited laboratories and testing facilities, coupled with lack of trained manpower in existing testing laboratories can sometimes represent a major hurdle.
The South-South training facility intends to train chemists, scientists, analysts and laboratory management staff from food and agro testing laboratories in developing countries, particularly LDCs. The facility will also facilitate know-how transfer and skill development in operating and managing laboratories. The overall aim is to improve the technical and management capabilities of staff working in testing laboratories in the food and agro sectors, and ultimately enhance the trade capacity of exporting countries.
