EU, UNIDO set up Centre in Sudan to develop industrial skills, entrepreneurship for job creation
KHARTOUM, 5 February 2011 – Some 400 people, including Government officials and business representatives attended the opening of a new vocational training and entrepreneurship Centre in Halfait Almuluk, in Khartoum State, the fourth of its kind.
For the last three years, UNIDO and the European Commission have been working hand in hand with the Khartoum State Government to set up services and training infrastructures to address the productive work and entrepreneurial potential.
Speaking at the opening, the UNIDO Representative in Sudan, Kassahun Tesemma, said the Centre will help develop sustainable livelihoods and improve the overall socio-economic standards of living for young persons and women.
It will also promote demand-oriented technical skills training for youth employment, and help develop the local business environment, while nurturing an entrepreneurial culture in the country, he said.
Acknowledgements to UNIDO and the EU were made by the Federal Minister of Industry, Awad Ahmed Al-Jaz, who expressed hope for further UNIDO collaboration in this endeavor.
European Union (EU) Ambassador Carlo De Filippi expressed the commitment of the Commission to continue assisting both North and Southern Sudan, and the willingness to establish similar facilities in other states in the North.
The assistance to the Halfait Almuluk Centre and to the three other vocational centres in Khartoum State was provided within the framework of the UNIDO Young Entrepreneurship Development (YED) programme.
