Panama UN event looks at setting private sector development global knowledge management system

PANAMA CITY, 1 March 2011 – Establishing a global knowledge sharing and management system for inter-agency projects in the field of private sector development is the aim of a meeting that opened in the capital of Panama today.

The three-day event was organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the MDG Achievement Fund (MDG-F).

This inter-agency initiative is seen as a mechanism for the exchange of knowledge, concepts and ideas among local practitioners and global strategists. The MDG-F programmes are joint programmes that bring together an average of six UN Agencies in a collective effort to strengthen the UN system’s ability to deliver as one.

The meeting was attended by the Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Álvaro Antonio Alemán Healy, the UN Resident Coordinator in Panama, Kim Bolduc, and the UNIDO Regional Representative, Kai Bethke. It was chaired by the Coordinator of the Donor Committee for Enterprise Development (DCED), Jim Tanburn. The Vice-Minister for Foreign Trade, José Domingo Arias Villalaz will also attend.

The meeting brought together programme managers from 12 country based projects in the thematic area of private sector development, including from Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Panama, as well as key stakeholders from the UN system and representatives of the private sector.

The event is part of the UNIDO project, Establishing a global knowledge management system for private sector development, which focuses on enhancing the United Nations system’s knowledge capabilities in the field.
