VIENNA, 2 May 2011 – A new partnership between the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Austrian Energy Agency (AEA), a non-profit scientific association, will help promote and support the efficient use of energy, especially of renewable sources of energy and of innovative technologies with special focus on the mitigation of climate change.
An agreement on this was signed in Vienna today by UNIDO Director-General, Kandeh K. Yumkella, and the AEA Deputy Director, Herbert Lechner.
“Today’s agreement reflects the significant potential for synergies and mutually beneficial collaborations between UNIDO and the AEA,” said Yumkella.
He added that the AEA was very active in Central and Eastern Europe, especially in the frame of bilateral Energy Partnerships, and in the Balkans region where it has executed a number of projects, many funded by the European Union. AEA is also collaborating with developing countries with a special focus in the support of the development of sustainable energy policies as well as on institutional setup and capacity building. “A partner that has such strong knowledge of the regions’ energy context, an established network of counterparts and tested experts in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy, especially in industry, is very important for us,” said Yumkella.
The collaboration and partnership with the AEA will focus on the development and support of sustainable energy supply at national, regional and international levels, increased energy efficiency on the supply and demand side, and renewable energies for productive uses and income generation at industrial level and in households. It will also help in the development of sustainable energy policies and regional partnerships, and capacity building in the field of renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate change.
The UNIDO-AEA partnership will also help in building up local capacities in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy in developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
The AEA works closely with the Austrian Development Agency.
