UNIDO Director-General meets Head of Gas Exporting Countries Forum
VIENNA, 21 June 2010 - The Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Leonid Bokhanovskiy, and the Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Kandeh K. Yumkella, met at the Vienna Energy Forum today to discuss ways of cooperating together in common areas of interest.
This meeting was a follow up to the contacts developed between the Secretary-General of the GECF and the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, who expressed the interest of the UN Organizations in developing closer relations with the GECF, a new energy organization.
Secretary-General Bokhanovskiy highlighted the strengths of UNIDO as a worldwide institution focused on the promotion of industrial development that takes into account social and environmental issues.
The GECF is an organization that gathers 11 of the most important natural gas producers, which are committed to plan and manage sustainable, efficient and environmentally conscious development of their natural gas resources.
Yumkella and Bokhanovskiy agreed to look at developing joint activities that would allow the exchange of information and points of view. Bokhanovskiy also said that UNIDO’s expertise in collecting and managing industrial statistics and databases related to the industry in general and the gas industry in particular could be useful for strengthening the capabilities of the GECF, and praised the role of UNIDO in the promotion of clean and safe energies, such as natural gas, for the world industrial development.
The Members of the GECF are Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. Kazakhstan, the Netherlands and Norway are Observer Members of the Forum.
