Lebanon hosts regional event with focus on boosting agri-business in the Middle East and North Africa
BEIRUT, 18 November 2011 – Ways to enhance the performance and competitiveness of small and medium agro-enterprises in the Middle East and North Africa were the focus ofa regional agro-industrial Forum that ended in the Lebanese capital today.
The three-day event attracted the attention of regional and international financial institutions, as well as bilateral donors.
“Facilitating bigger international contribution to the agro-industries development in the Middle East and North Africa region is a vital step towards stabilizing local economies,” said Khaled El-Mekwad, UNIDO Representative for Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.
He added that the Forum was part of a series of global activities jointly organized by UNIDO and FAO. “UNIDO stands ready to further extend the accumulated knowledge and experience in agro-industrial and agribusiness development to countries in the region.
Participants also looked at how to mobilize more investments for the agro-industry in the Middle East and North Africa, reinforce innovation and development in the agro-processing and strengthen regional cooperation.
